SK Telecom: down 18%, but no company problem in sight

SK Telecom recent price and volume

The KOSPI fell 2.62% to 6,625.93 on Oct. 8. SK Telecom fell 3.66% that day. Over five sessions the stock is down 1.8%. Against its July 10 close of 88,700 won, it is down 5.1%. The drop from the high is large, but the past week's decline is mild.

According to Paper Trail's own check, the fall looks more like a sector-wide pullback tied to chip-led foreign selling and a weak KOSPI. We found no accounting issue, lawsuit, management trouble or sign of weakening earnings. Recent news is about AI data centers and model development, but nothing shows those stories moved the stock.

Flows are mixed. In our flow records, foreign investors were net buyers on each of the last five sessions, 366,804 shares in total. Institutions were net sellers of 288,818 shares over the same period. In a broker report on Oct. 7, Mirae Asset Securities said third-quarter earnings should beat the market consensus. That is a forecast, not a result.

There is evidence on the other side. In our financial checklist, revenue growth is +0.5% and return on equity is 5.2%, so growth drivers look weak. Relative performance against the market over six months is -17.5%. Two treasury-share disposal filings came in late August and early September, which our check flags as possible supply pressure.

The stock also fell 16.04% in one day on July 28. The data we checked does not explain that drop, and we make no judgment on whether it is linked to the current slide.

Two things to check next. First, whether third-quarter results beat consensus, and whether any new filings, such as treasury-share disposals, appear. Second, whether institutional selling stops while foreign buying continues.
